Google Drive File Stream is an application that allows you to access all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer without having to synchronize your entire drive or shared drive (saving storage space on your device). With Google Drive File Stream, you can access files in your both own Drive and Shared Drives. Installing Google Drive File Stream for Mac. What is it?

Installation

  1. Download Google Drive File Stream for Mac or Windows. You must be logged into your Google account to see this page.
  2. Run the installation package.
  3. Log into the portal with your UT email address and password.
  4. Select Allow on the required permissions prompt.

System Requirements

  • Windows: Windows 7 and up. Windows Server editions are not supported.
  • Mac: El Capitan (10.11) and up. For High Sierra (10.13), follow these steps.

Getting Started

Once Google Drive File Stream is installed, a folder called Google Drive will appear on the left in Finder or File Explorer. This folder will contain both your personal Google Drive and any Team Drives you are part of. The only difference between these files and any other file on your computer is that these files are not stored on your computer by default, and any changes you make to them will sync automatically with your cloud storage.

macOS known issue: If you receive an error that says, Google Drive File Stream encountered a problem and has stopped, Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Allow Google Drive Files Stream.

By default, Google Drive File Stream does not store a copy of your files on your local computer. This means that if you do not have an Internet connection, you will not be able to access these files. In order make your files accessible offline, right-click on a file or folder and select Available Offline under the Drive File Stream menu. Please note that doing so will store a copy on your computer, using up more of your hard drive space.

There are two versions of the G Suite Drive Desktop App available for download and installation. At Bates, you will want to use Drive File Stream (Business) and not the Backup and Sync (Personal) version.

    • Once G Suite Drive File Stream has been installed, you will find a Drive File Stream icon on your computer's Desktop and/or in your computer's Notification area.
      • On a Windows computer, you will find the Notification area at the bottom right of your Desktop
      • On a Mac, you will find the Notification area at the top right of the Desktop

Note: The G Suite Drive File Stream Desktop App does not work like the previous G Suite Drive Desktop App. When you access a file from your G Suite Drive File Stream folder, you will be directly accessing the file from the Google Cloud and not a local copy that will then be synchronized with your Google Cloud account. If you need to access your files from your Bates G Suite Drive account when you do not have access to the Internet, you will need to select those files/folders before going offline and set them to be available to you in an offline mode.
